Interfaces for Collaborative Exploratory Web Search: Motivations and Directions for Multi-User Designs
نویسنده
چکیده
In this position paper, we examine exploratory Web search as a collaborative activity and propose that such collaborations are commonplace. We present survey results that support this claim, and argue that current search interfaces provide limited support for common collaboration needs. We identify four features of the exploratory search experience (coverage, confidence, exposure, and productivity) that could be enhanced by providing explicit support for collaboration during the search and subsequent sensemaking processes.

Collaborative Multi-Paradigm Exploratory Search
New challenges for advanced web search interfaces and visualization tools arise as user needs shift from traditional lookup tasks towards more open ended search activities collectively described as exploratory search. Exploratory search opens new possibilities for employing social aspects for effective information retrieval. We facilitate exploratory search by providing users with an integrated...

Due to the huge amount of data published on the Web, the Web search process has become more difficult, and it is sometimes hard to get the expected results, especially when the users are less certain about their information needs. Several efforts have been proposed to support exploratory search on the web by using query expansion, faceted search, or supplementary information extracted from exte...

One of the most famous methods for recommendation is user-based Collaborative Filtering (CF). This system compares active user’s items rating with historical rating records of other users to find similar users and recommending items which seems interesting to these similar users and have not been rated by the active user. As a way of computing recommendations, the ultimate goal of the user-ba...
متن کاملCollaborative Information Retrieval: Concepts, Models and Evaluation
Recent work have shown the potential of collaboration for solving complex or exploratory search tasks allowing to achieve synergic effects with respect to individual search, which is the prevalent information retrieval (IR) setting this last decade. This interactive multi-user context gives rise to several challenges in IR. One main challenge relies on the adaptation of IR techniques or models ...

This is a nine month progress report detailing my research into supporting users in their search for information, where the questions, results or even their environment requires functionality beyond the scope of keyword search alone. While keyword search environments, such as Google, have become the familiar standard for search on the web, research has shown that users, who may not know which k...
